Population

The San Antonio-New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 951,876 in 1970 to 2,142,508 in 2010. That was an increase of 125.1 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 47,052 in 1970 to 257,999 in 2010. That was an increase of 448.3 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 4.9 percent to 12.0 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 108.3 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in population increase in the first period and NDM was the primary factor in the two most recent periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the relative importance of the three factors in population increase remained unchanged.
